There have been many documentaries on the legendary James Brown, but this British doc by Adrian Maben is a must see. Released in 1978, Soul Brother #1 presents James Brown’s story through candid interviews with the man himself. We learn about Brown’s childhood struggles growing up 20 miles from Augusta, GA to breaking through in the industry with his classic tune, “Please, Please, Please.” We also learn about Brown’s views on politics, co-signing the efforts of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. But it doesn’t end there. The incredible concert footage captured for this documentary is the real seller. Watch in excitement as the King performs such classics as “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” and “Get on the Good Foot” in front of his many followers. For any James Brown/funk music aficionado, this documentary is mandatory viewing. As always, enjoy and be educated.
